Once
the paper is delivered to your doorstep, there are a few steps
you can take to ensure you get the best from the paper.
Preparing Your Paper
Wookey Hole handmade cotton papers are made by skilled craftsmen
in a time honoured manner. Depending on the weight of the
paper the following hints are offered as guidelines, not guarantees,
but will hopefully help you enjoy and benefit from the qualities
of this unique paper.
Heavy watercolour papers
Imperial 200lbs and Royal 140lbs
These heavy papers can be used without stretching. However,
because the paper is heavily (hard) sized, it has an initial
tendency to repel liquids. The following process will make
its use easier.
- Pass a damp sponge over the surface of the sheet several
times
- Leave for approximately half an hour
- Repeat the first step and then commence work up the sheet
This process has the effect of removing the surface sheen
of the neutral sizing agent.
Light watercolour papers
Royal 90lbs and Pott 40lbs
These lighter weight papers benefit from being stretched
before use. The following method has been tested successfully
with our papers.
- Soak the paper for approximately half an hour in warm
or hot water.
- Remove from water and damp down with a tea towel.
- Place the paper on a thick blockboard and tape down with
good quality masking tape.
- Leave the paper to dry.
By this time the paper will have tightened up
and can now be painted on.
