The
majority of the paper produced at Wookey Mill is made from
100 per cent imported cotton. We explain in detail the painstaking
process of producing the finest cotton handmade paper.
The Exotic
In addition to fine one-hundred-per-cent-cotton papers, Wookey
Hole have introduced a range of alternative papers to appeal
to the more adventurous artist.
There is a growing trend amongst artists of utilising Watercolour
paper for a wider range of techniques. The inherent archival
properties of the Wookey Hole paper make it well suited to
art applications. Constable, Turner and Holbein are just three
artists who have used watercolor paper in place of oil canvases.
These papers can also be used for drawing, mixed media, gouache,
pen and inks, acrylics and calligraphy.
Denim
Utilising denim off-cuts from the clothing industry the mill
has created an exotic paper well suited to a variety of art
techniques. The textured light blue hue of the paper make
it attractive as a painting surface. In the past, the denim
off cuts would have found their way to landfill sites, so
this denim paper comes with good environmental credentials.
Hemp
Hemp, or Cannabis Stiva to use its scientific name, is particularly
well suited to papermaking. Its long, thick fibres create
a very strong paper with incredible dimensional stability.
Hemp was one of the earliest materials used in the making
of paper. Given that one acre of hemp yields four times as
much papermaking fibre as one acre of trees, it could be the
environmental paper of the future. In the meantime this attractive
textured paper provides a unique surface for a wide range
of artistic applications limited only by your imagination.
